Amidst the ongoing energy crisis triggered by the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday issued a stark warning, cautioning the world that a large global population may again slip into poverty if the situation doesn’t change rapidly.
Addressing the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands, Prime Minister Modi said that first the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the global economy and after that wars began to break out with the recent Iran war triggering an unprecedented energy crisis.

“First came the corona(virus) pandemic; then wars began to break out, and now there is an energy crisis. This decade is turning into a decade of disasters for the world,” he said in Hindi.
The Indian Prime Minister warned that if the situation doesn’t change rapidly, achievements of the past several decades would be wasted and a huge section of the global population would be pushed back into poverty.
“If the situation doesn’t rapidly change, achievements of the past many decades would be washed away, and a huge section of the world’s population would be pushed back into poverty,” Modi cautioned.
He further stressed the need for a resilient supply chain, asserting that India and the Netherlands are working closely to build a “trusted, transparent and future-ready supply chain”.
Later, Modi also reiterated this during his meeting with Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch in The Hague.
“India and the Netherlands are connected by shared interests and a shared belief in building a future-ready planet,” the PM said.
The warning by PM Modi came days after he urged Indians to save fuel and reduce the use of foreign products in a bid to save forex amid “one of the biggest crises of this decade” after the Coronavirus pandemic.
He urged people to revive Covid-era methods such as work from home, online classes, virtual meetings and reduced consumption of petrol and diesel.
“If the COVID pandemic was the biggest crisis of this century, then the circumstances created by the war in West Asia are one of the major crises of this decade. When we together overcame the challenge of COVID, we will surely get through this crisis as well. The government is also continuously making efforts to ensure that its impact on the people of the country is minimal,” he said.
The conflict in West Asia has triggered a global energy crisis with around 20 per cent of the fuel supply disrupted due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz shipping route in the Persian Gulf.
